Breed Blog (Araucanas)

Writer's picture: Camille JacksonCamille Jackson

Welcome to this weeks Breed Blog! Or late last weeks😅😅.

Our breed in the spotlight today is Araucanas!

We will go over the attributes, faults and origins!

Araucanas are often confused with Ameraucanas, the main difference between the two are Araucanas don’t have tails also Araucanas have ear tufts not beards! They are rumples, giving them an odd yet beautiful type. Just like Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers they lay colored eggs, which adds to the name mixup! Yet Araucanas only lay blue eggs

Finding pure heritage Araucanas can prove to be quite a challenge! Due to them being quite rare and also Easter Eggers being everywhere and people believing they have Araucanas when if fact they have a breed not even accepted in the standard. Like Araucanas and Ameraucanas are. Sadly the same gene that gives this breed their odd and pleasing to look at ear tufts also provides incubation and hatching issues

The Original place of origin as hard to track but it is believed that some strands likely came from some area in South America . An interesting fact about these birds is when bred to another breed the offspring will lay colored eggs, so creating Easter Eggers!!
