🌟 Here’s the 3rd edition of our Breed Blog! In this blog we talk about the breed’s faults, attributes and origins!🌟

In the breed spotlight today we will be talking about S͎i͎l͎k͎i͎e͎s͎!🤍🖤

Pictures from Spoiled Clucks Acres!💚

❄️ Silkies are cuddly floof balls with an extra back toe on each foot! They lay small cream colored eggs at about 100 a year. Most people don’t buy them for the egg rate but mostly for their cute down looking feathers almost giving them the look of a super sized chick. They are also known for their temperament most people if not for showing, get them for their kids and for themselves to enjoy. They are a feather legged breed meaning their toes and legs are covered in these feathers. They can be bearded or non bearded depending on the variety.

Now on to the faults. By now I’m sure you have gathered they are not the best layers. But in some places like Asia they can be harvested for meat and their quality of having black skin all over due to back pigment. But if you are looking to have some cuties in your yard with the added bonus of getting eggs every once and awhile they could be your thing! Sadly silkies supposedly have been known to contract Mareks disease easier than other breeds. Also with their feathers being fluffier and possibly thicker they can become an easy target for mites if not treated often. Of course mite population can have lots to do with climate and humidity too.

Silkies are thought to have originated from around China and India having gained popularity and migrated towards North America. Now they can be found all over the world. In the show circuit they are supposed to be adorned with a purple walnut comb, having a red or different color comb can result in disqualification. All of the different varieties accepted and found in the show circuit are:

Bearded/Non-bearded White, Bearded/Non-bearded Black, Bearded/Non-bearded Buff, Bearded/Non-bearded Blue, Bearded/Non-bearded Splash, Bearded/Non-bearded Gray, Bearded/Non-bearded Partridge, Bearded Self Blue, Bearded White Naked Neck, Bearded Paint.
