Breed Blog (Brahmas)

Writer's picture: Camille JacksonCamille Jackson

Welcome to this weeks 𝙱𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚍 𝙱𝚕𝚘𝚐! This is where we provide the attributes, faults and origins of this weeks breed! And at the end we added a short summary from Stephen Bailey, a breeder of Light Brahmas. Along with some of his pictures!

The breed in this weeks spotlight is 𝔹𝕣𝕒𝕙𝕞𝕒𝕤!

Large Fowl Brahmas are huge hearty birds with long feathered legs. With their bantam counterpart still large for being a bantams. Brahmas are often sought after for their size, eggs and overall magnificent features! With a lifespan of a steady 5-8 years and adult males weighing 12 pounds with an average max of 2.5 feet! Most brahmas are also know for their calm temperament and compatibility with kids! And even because of their size and usually being on top of the pecking order they generally aren’t flock bullies.

Even though Brahmas aren’t a breed of many faults they do have a couple. One being hens take longer to mature into egg production, with their time span being around 6-7 months. Seeing the sheer size and amount of feathering it might be harder to raise them in hot climates unless you have proper shaded runs. And due to feathered feet during the winter months when their feet become wet it can lead to frostbite.

The Light and Dark varieties of Brahma were admitted to the APA (American Poultry Association) in 1874. Their origin starts in Shanghai yet most of the breed development was done in the US! They are in the Asiatic class. The varieties accepted so far are Light, Dark and Buff, with other varieties in the making.

From Stephen Bailey,

“I've learned so much about this breed since I started. How docile they are, they love treats, hate the heat and love our cow! They're actually very vocal in comparison to my other fowl. I've learned they can actually lay different colored eggs ranging from light pink to shades of light brown.the rate of about 4 to 5 a week. They make the best pet ever, just ask my daughter”
