Our Second Chicken Breed Blog Post

Writer's picture: Camille JacksonCamille Jackson

This is the second blog post in our blog breed series. We will provide different breeds attributes, faults and origins!

The breed in our spotlight today are White Leghorns!

Leghorns are mainly known for their extensive laying rate, they can lay around 280-320 eggs per year! These birds are likely the ones responsible for the medium/large white eggs you see at the store. Single Comb Leghorns are known for their large red comb usually flopping over one side of their face and sometimes blocking their view. Males also usually have long beautiful sickle feathers draping over other tail feathers.

Though White Leghorns might not be the prettiest to choose from without any golden adorned feathers or laced feathers. But they are more for egg farms wanting to sell eggs fast and efficiently. Whether they are for a hobby farm could be debated, mainly because males and females can be quite flighty and roosters (like most others) can turn aggressive.

Leghorns originated in Italy yet were developed in America, England, and Denmark. Their egg production and hardiness was the main trait bred for at that time. Though Single Comb White Leghorns seem to be the easiest to find there are actually several more varieties with about half having rounded Rose Combs. For example, Rose Comb Browns and Whites, Single Comb Columbians, Reds, and Black-tailed Reds. Adding the more common Comb Whites, Blacks, and Browns!
